This message is specifically for nursing mothers who need to pump during the school day.

Effective June 19, 2024, the New York State Labor Law Section 206-c was amended and now requires employers to provide 30 minutes of paid break time for employees to express breast milk whenever there is a reasonable need. This mandate applies up to three years following childbirth.

Important Steps to Take:

  • Returning from Maternity Leave: If you are returning from maternity leave, you must notify your direct supervisor of your request in writing. Your written request can be sent via email, text message, or written correspondence. Please include details about how many breaks you anticipate needing during the workday, and if you have preferred times for expressing breast milk, include that information as well. They have 5 days to respond in writing to your request.
  • Previously Returned from Maternity Leave: If you returned from maternity leave previously and will continue to pump, please follow the same steps outlined above, as your break needs may have changed.
